LPI Partner of the Month January 2012: LinuxTag

LinuxTag is Europe's leading specialist trade show and conference on all aspects of Linux and Open Source. This four-day event has been taking place since 1996, and since 2007 it has been held annually on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds. It offers the very latest information for professional users, decision-makers, developers, newcomers and the community. In addition to the programme of papers and a separate congress for business and public sector authorities, LinuxTag also includes an exhibition featuring projects and companies associated with the Open Source sector.  Its non-commercial host is Verein LinuxTag e.V., which is also staging the event in association with the trade show.

The LinuxTag tutorials, conducted by experts, are a quick way for professional administrators and users to obtain an overview of some key technologies. The Linux Professional Institute (LPI) provides discounted exams during LinuxTag in which those who have acquired this knowledge can also obtain the necessary certification. Already since 2004 the LPI is a partner at LinuxTag in each year and as a result LPI nowerdays is a cornerstone of this event. Again in may 2012 LPI will take part actively as Certification Sponsor of LinuxTag in Berlin.

The 18th LinuxTag will be taking place from 23 to 26 May 2012 and the venue will once again be the Berlin Exhibition Grounds at the Funkturm. Preparations are already well under way. The Call for Papers was launched in December and proposals for inclusion in the programme of papers will be accepted up to 24 January. The main themes of this year's LinuxTag are "Android Mods und Devs", "Enterprise Storage from Flash to SSD" and "Monitoring and Configuration Management". Suggested topics dealing with Linux, Open Source and Free Software should be submitted to the LinuxTag Virtual Conference Center (vCC). For queries to the Programme Committee: vp@linuxtag.org.

The Business and Administration Congress (BuBK) forms a regular part of the programme of papers. Its case studies and progress reports are intended in particular for Linux and Open Source users in business and administration. In 2012 Open Data and Security & the Law will again be among its main themes.

Education is one subject that will be playing a much more important role at LinuxTag this year. Some relevant suggestions were submitted by the participants in the 2nd OpenSource ManagerMorning, an event that was held at the end of November in Berlin at the invitation of Open Source Business Alliance e.V. and LinuxTag. Experts from the fields of IT and education took this opportunity to investigate the question "What can be learned from Open Source. Open minds for improved education in Berlin".

A joint venture was signed at LinuxTag 2011 by LPI e.V. and Verein Freie Software und Bildung e.V. for long term cooperation in schools, vocational schools and universities. These two associations are working together as a more effective way of achieving their shared objectives, and of establishing their training for Linux and Open Source more firmly in German educational systems.
