The Path to
Certification

Linux Professional Institute (LPI) exams are offered as computer-based exams at thousands of secure Pearson VUE test centers worldwide.
The steps required to take the exam that leads to LPI certification are described below.

Sometimes LPI exams are also offered on-site at Linux and open source events. In these cases, the exams are taken as paper tests. The requirements for taking these types of tests depend on the organization or event organizer and may differ from the following steps.

Step one:

Find out which certification is best for you

Linux Professional Institute (LPI) is committed to providing the IT community with exams of the highest quality, relevance and accuracy. This commitment requires that our exam development process be highly detailed, participative, consultative and use many of the proven techniques of most other IT certification programs.

Step two:

Explore the objectives

At Linux Professional Institute, there is no guesswork about what the exam will say.

Our objectives show you what topics you can expect in the exams and their relative importance. Regardless of which learning materials you choose to prepare for your LPI exams, the review of each learning objective should be at the heart of any curriculum.

Step three:

Prepare for your exam

How you prepare for the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) exam varies greatly from person to person. Some people look at the learning objectives and then study on their own (using man pages, FAQs, etc.) until they feel confident enough to take the exam. Others prefer to read books, take part in web-based or computer-based training or attend trainer-led courses offered in a training centre.

We believe that you should have a choice and not be forced to take a particular approach to exam preparation. That's why LPI is committed to never name a mandatory set of LPI training materials. We are very proud of the support we have received from many creators of training materials and believe in maximum choice for those who want to take LPI exams.

Step 4:

Register for the exam

Linux Professional Institute (LPI) offers professional certifications that demonstrate your knowledge and skills in various areas of the Linux operating system. The LPI program is distribution-neutral and proves that you can work flexibly in a variety of Linux environments. LPI's globally recognized Linux certifications can therefore help you demonstrate the skills you need for your next job or promotion.
